Michael D. Park Promotes Sustainable Construction and Builds Societies
A self-described "brown builder," Michael D. Park uses the earth and renewable resources to build homes and other structures
LAS CRUCES, NM, June 23, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ --- An active proponent of green construction for the last five decades, Michael D. Park has spent almost as much time building up his industry as he has building structures. As the owner of Park Enterprises, LLC, an environmental construction company, he relishes the opportunity to educate people about sustainable construction and the use of renewable energy and resources. "A good friend of mine renamed the term [from] 'green technology' to 'brown technology,'" he shared in an interview with Cambridge Who's Who. "We are really what we call 'brown builders' - we take things from the earth and use them. It's a unique industry. The products have been around for 15 years but people are just starting, with the [current] energy situation, to look at us."
Park, who established his first construction company in 1976, began his career as early as the 1950's. A third-generation tradesman, he learned everything he knows from his forebears; his grandfather was a stonemason who emigrated from Ireland at the turn of the last century and his father was a carpenter and general contractor who built everything from houses to industrial plants. Park first earned his stripes at his father's firm, working as a carpenter, iron worker and operating engineer. When he acquired the confidence he needed to strike out on his own, he focused his attention on a revolutionary development in the construction field. Living in the Pacific Northwest, the so-called Mecca of the green industry, he immersed himself in research and has since found a fitting practice ground in New Mexico, where early Native Americans used earth as building material. "We are using Mother Nature the way the early people did," he said. "We're not going backwards but harnessing [what] they did."
A journeyman carpenter and certified welder with a degree in business administration, Park is determined to pass on his love of construction - green and brown - to future generations. "One of my great frustrations is that our trades are dying. We need to educate our young people to step up, do a little [risk-taking], get their hands dirty." At present, Park is preparing to parlay his penchant for building sustainable structures into building societies. Last January, he announced his intention to run for a position in the county commission. "I enjoy doing things, watching things progress. To me, quite honestly, the word 'retire' means 'sit down and wait to die.' And I'm not ready," he explained.
